There are two types of Field Training Exercises (FTX's), one for those of us who are trying to commission into the military and for those of us who are not. Army and Marine Corps definitely have the worst FTX's. They both go to the woods and are essentially subjected to a massive suckfest for days. The temperature at FT Pickett even dropped low enough for it to snow while the Army keydets were up there.
Non Com FTX, however, is entirely different. These keydets slept in barracks and did community service in Lexington, where it was a pleasant 65-70 degrees. One group of people even went to the local SPCA and got to play with kittens and puppies for a while. Don't let Non Com undersell it to you, though, some of those kittens had sharp claws...
