Don’t worry Rats. This week is totally legit. Yup… Uh-huh… You’re going through a “real” breakout. Fakeouts never happen anymore…
For the rest of the world, "Breakout" is the culminating event of the Ratline. Back in the Old Corps, in the days before safety regulations when men were men, Rats would be herded into the large corner room and have to fight their way through the upperclassmen standing between them and the stoop ("breaking out" of the room).
Unfortunately this wonderful and in no way dangerous whatsoever system gave way to fighting your way up the steps from first to fourth stoop with the entire old corps between the Rat-Mass and salvation. However, this was typically done in freezing temperatures and spoiled milk, eggs, and water had a mysterious way of finding itself on the same path the Rats would have to go.
Later on, this was again changed to "breakout hill" on North Post where the fire department would come and spray down a clay hill that became saturated with slick mud. Rats would have to crawl their way up with upperclassmen pushing and pulling them down the hill, once again, in frigid temperatures.
Now they go through an arduous day of suck, finalizing in a unique pinnacle event to end the day.
